Most Jacksonville homes heat with a heat pump — the same outdoor unit that cools you in summer runs in reverse to warm the house in winter. That works well in our mild climate right up until a real cold front drops temperatures into the 30s, which is exactly when an undersized or neglected system, or a failed bank of backup strip heat, leaves you cold. Because the heat runs so little here, problems hide all year and only show up on the coldest night.
That is the case for a fall heating check. We test the heat pump's reversing valve, confirm the auxiliary and emergency strip heat actually energize, and check that the system is not burning expensive backup heat when it does not need to. It is a short visit that keeps you from discovering a dead heater at 11pm in January.
